Prior to operating equipment in the facility, specialized training is required. It is the responsibility of the user to obtain the requisite training for equipment. All lab members are required to participate in coaxial connectors training.
Training Procedure
If a regular lab user wishes to schedule training, they should request training in the iEMSL app. Upon demonstration of competency, the lab user is permitted to use any core equipment meeting their certifications. Equipment can then be reserved as described on this page. If the user does not have the required certifications for a piece of equipment, they will not be able to reserve it.
The iEMSL offers three forms of training: Coaxial Connectors Care and Safety (Coax), Vector Network Analyzers (VNA), and Probing Stations.
Training | Equipment Usage | Prerequisites |
---|---|---|
Coaxial Connectors Care and Safety (Coax) | Mandatory for all users | Watch coaxial connectors training video |
Vector Network Analyzers (VNA) | Required for VNA use | Coax training + Watch PNA-X vector network analyzers training video + ZVA67 training video + Optional Concepts playlist |
Probing Stations | Required for probing station use | Coax training + VNA training |
If unfamiliar with S-parameters and Smith Charts or need to review it, please watch this optional playlist.

Certification
It is the responsibility of the user to obtain certification before using core equipment. Once you obtain the certification you will automatically be listed as an authorized user and be able to reserve core equipment freely. The list of required training for each core equipment is found below.
* Use of the anechoic chamber is limited to chamber operators. Training will be provided on a very limited basis.
** Though no training is required for 3D printers, please coordinate with a lab technician to cover basic safety and operating procedure.
For equipment not mentioned above, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the safe and proper usage by referring to the equipment’s instruction and safety manuals. If uncertain, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from the iEMSL staff.
Workshops
In-house equipment workshops will be provided from time to time in order to illustrate the capabilities and potential applications of the Core Instrumentation. Workshops for introducing new equipment to the users’ community will also be organized as needed.
Training sessions will be organized by the Managing Director of iEMSL on an as-needed basis.
