Training

Prior to operating equipment in the facility, specialized training is required. It is the responsibility of the user to obtain certification on a piece of equipment prior to use.

Prime Users

iEMSL operate on the basis of prime users in order to maintain the many pieces of equipment throughout the lab. In the event that a regular user encounters a problem, malfunction or error with a specific piece of equipment, he or she should first contact the prime user for that equipment. In the event that a prime user is unavailable or unable to solve the issue, the Managing Director should be contacted.

If a regular lab user wishes to be trained on a particular piece of equipment, he or she should contact the prime user to begin training. Upon demonstration of competency, the prime user will provide a form certifying the lab user on that piece of equipment to the iEMSL Staff. You will then become an authorized user of the equipment that you received training for and you will be able to reserve the equipment as described on this page.

A prime user is a master’s or PhD student or postdoctoral fellow who has shown the highest level of skill and expertise on a particular piece of equipment in the iEMSL lab. Prime users are given the follow responsibilities:

  • Ensuring users are aware of and adhere to safe working practices for the equipment.
  • Training new users on equipment usage.
  • Performing regular equipment maintenance.
  • Ensuring that the equipment is usable by all interested parties
  • Addressing any equipment problems or concerns.
  • Providing assistance with necessary equipment repairs.

Certification

It is the responsibility of the user to obtain certification on a piece of equipment prior to use. Certification is done through contacting the prime user. Once you obtain the certification for certain equipment, please contact the iEMSL staff to get added to the authorized user list of that equipment. The list of prime users are found below:

** The anechoic chamber will primarily be operated by prime users. Training for its use will be provided on a very limited basis.

For equipment not mentioned above, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the safe and proper usage by referring to the equipment’s instruction and safety manuals. If uncertain, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from the iEMSL staff.

Workshops

In-house equipment workshops will be provided from time to time in order to illustrate the capabilities and potential applications of the Core Instrumentation. Workshops for introducing new equipment to the users’ community will also be organized as needed.

Training sessions will be organized by the Managing Director of iEMSL on an as-needed basis.
