The iEMSL houses a fully functional Anechoic Chamber and associated equipment to enable antenna characterization measurements from 800 MHz to 140 GHz. The chamber interior measures 24 ft, 10 ft and 6.5 ft in length, width and height. It features a quiet zone with better than 20 dB attenuation using an automated measurement system for RF, microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies.
This facility is currently used to characterize the input match as well as radiation pattern of the antennas from 800 MHz to 40 GHz. The maximum antenna (or system) size should be 24 x 24 inches with a depth of 24 inches or less. Usage of the chamber is conducted through the iEMSL’s Assisted Measurement program.
The chamber is located in the Wisenbaker Engineering Building (WEB) room 160.

Radiation Pattern Measurements
Using a dual-axis positioning system, the iEMSL anechoic chamber can measure and quantify the transmission characteristics of antennas.
The radiation pattern of an antenna reveals crucial information about transmission and reception performance.
Elevation and azimuthal “slices” or “cuts” show a 2D representation of an antenna’s radiation pattern. iEMSL students and staff are working to develop a method for measuring radiation patterns in three dimensions.
Users of the anechoic chamber will receive a .csv file of their antenna’s radiation pattern.
